Pu Yi was born into the Qing dynasty, which had ruled China for over 200 years. He was the last emperor of the dynasty, and his reign was marked by political turmoil and the encroachment of Western powers into China. Pu Yi was only six years old when he was declared emperor, and he was raised in a world of luxury and privilege, surrounded by eunuchs and courtiers.
